If you are connected to the internet you MUST
run a firewall as well as anti-virus software. Again, we suggest at least
the inexpensive hardware device from Cisco,
but at a minimum , for
individual computers, a software firewall is a good start. We
like the Zone Alarm product best out many we have tested and it's free for the time
being;

Without a firewall
you are walking blindfolded down a dark street in the Bronx with your
wallet half out of your back pocket. If you don't know why we say this, call
us.
For even just home
use, or a small office, a firewall is not enough. Basic firewall systems will
stop an intrusive attack, but by hitting web links you may be inviting in
malicious software. Firewalls that can prevent this are expensive, starting
at several thousand dollars. An alternative is to assume you have been
breached and run cleaning
sweeps periodically; we suggest
Ad-Aware, though we have found that it misses some threats. For this reason
we suggest using it in conjunction with
Spybot.
This is a good place to
discuss virus and spam fighting. If you have an ordinary virus you don't need us; buy
a copy of PC Tools or AVG ( Norton and MacAfee have gotten, in our
experience, bloated and hard to tune, as well as often late in coming out
with solutions to modern threats) - though we are happy to come in and tune these
products. If they don't work it may be due to the newness of the virus; it
takes these firms time to create a cure. In the meantime we can be of help;
all viruses work by manipulating the operating system, inevitably placing
themselves in startup routines of the system. As we know these processes we
are often able to manually disable viruses if not completely eliminate them.
Many new viruses steal
credit card info and send it back to - in our last case, Russia. We were of
invaluable aid to our client even as we could only disable , not eliminate,
the virus ; we were able to see what the virus was doing and warn the client
to cancel his credit cards.
